What is a bedside crib?
A bedside crib (also called bassinet or co-sleeper) is a small infant crib that can be attached to your adult bed, allowing your newborn to sleep safely next to you. It is a safe method of co-sleeping that doesn't increase the risk of SIDS, like bedsharing. It also helps you bond with the new baby.
The cots usually have a side that can be adjusted so that you can easily reach your newborn throughout the night for feeding and comforting. This is particularly beneficial for mothers recovering from an op. Some are also portable or foldable, so you can take them on your travels and use them as a temporary sleep solution for newborns who aren't quite ready to move to a full-sized cot.
Look for a crib with an air-conditioned mattress, as well as an extra-safe cover that will shield your baby from stains. It is also advisable to buy baby-safe items like a blanket, teether and a soft toys.
If you're looking for a more long-term solution, some cribs come with conversion kits that let you transform them into a toddler bed or cot when the time is appropriate. This is great for extending their life span and making the transition smoother. Some even have a detachable top section that transforms into a bassinet, and some can be used as an ordinary or high-rise adult bed. This is an excellent choice for families that plan to travel frequently or change between bedrooms in the evening. You should also consider the size of your bedroom to ensure that you can squeeze the crib comfortably. Many cribs come with a riser which can be used to create an inclined position for infants who suffer from reflux.

The Maxi-Cosi lora
The Iora is a bassinet designed for infants designed to make parents feel more connected to their baby as they sleep. It can be adjusted both up and down and shifted through three different slide positions, to fit beside the bed of the parent or in the corner so that the baby is always in reach. The mesh siding lets air circulate through, allowing you to see your baby quickly. You can also store additional pajamas or other items in the large storage basket beneath.
Unlike some other smaller bedside cribs, the Iora folds flat and comes with a bag for travel to allow it to be taken wherever. Our mom testers found it easy to move from room to room, and believed that it was a good size for a bedside cot, not too big or too small. They also liked the large storage basket which is ideal for stowing nappies or bedding.
This is a great choice for parents who want to sleep in a co-sleeping bed, but don't wish to share their bed. If one of the partners suffers from mobility issues, such as back pain or arthritis. Our mum testers were thrilled to be able to easily access their child in the Iora and that it included an option to have a reflux incline which helped alleviate gas.
Our mums appreciate the fact that it meets NICE guidelines which state that you should place the infant in the crib or Moses basket on its own (with no toys, blankets, pillows, etc). They also claim that the mattress is comfortable and firm for the baby and easy to find sheets for. It isn't as light as the other cribs for bedside use, though it is a good choice if you are looking for something lighter and more portable, consider one of the other options in our list.
